Workplace Harassment Laws by State: What Employers Need to Know

U.S. map highlighting the States that have Workplace Harassment Training Mandantes in place. List of States (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, and New York.

Workplace harassment prevention isn’t just a compliance checkbox; it’s a legal and cultural imperative. While some employers believe training is only required where statutes exist, the reality is broader. Several states — including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, and New York — and cities like Chicago and New York City have explicit laws mandating sexual harassment training for employees.

California’s AB 1825 and SB 1343 require regular training for both supervisors and non-supervisory staff. New York State and City laws mandate annual training, while Illinois and Delaware follow similar schedules. Maine and Connecticut extend their requirements to all employees, setting the standard for comprehensive prevention.

States with Workplace Harassment Mandates Currently in Place.

Even states without specific mandates, federal and state agencies strongly encourage training as part of a proactive approach to workplace safety and liability reduction. Employers in states such as Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin benefit from implementing consistent, organization-wide programs that reinforce respect and accountability.

A well-structured harassment training program doesn’t just meet compliance, it builds trust, minimizes risk, and helps create the kind of workplace where employees feel heard, protected, and valued.
